A Geological Index Of The Landscape is inspired by Anne Cauquelin’s concept that landscape is an invention only existing through representation. The series is built on the tension between emotions and rationalism; on a frenetic need to make the world fit scale in order to make it ones own.
The poetry of discovering the world and its landscapes is confronted with the processes of scientific investigation. It is this typological approach that gives these images an illusion of completeness, through the systematisation of physical and inanimate elements constituting the landscape.
The title suggests with irony that the photographer’s encyclopaedic fantasies are as vain as they are seductive. The absurd is there between the images and descriptions in the index, obscure and dry.
