In this series of paintings Julien Meert tries to describe a state that could be likened to the syndromes known in psychiatry as depersonalisation and derealisation. He uses pictorial means that function as visual “tricks,” like a dolly zoom in cinema, which zooms in while the camera pulls back, by playing with the contrast between the blurred faces and their sharp contours.
This book presents the entire series of self portraits to date along with studio views that reveal the differents stages of the painting process.
